The Trend for Brownies by Post

Updated: Jul 12, 2021

Just before Christmas a member of my family was mildly unwell with COVID and a wonderful friend of ours organised a gift of delicious chocolate brownies to be delivered to him through the post. We were extremely grateful of the treat and it served to highlight the dramatic growth of 'cake by post' that the pandemic has facilitated.

During the past 18th months bakeries have shown enormous skill in evolving the service they offer their customers. These changes stretch from large super markets adapting their freshly baked product offer, as well as their stock of ingredients for home bakers, to artisan bakers offering door step deliveries in their local area.

In October 2020 British Baker reported on COVID's impact on the UK cake market and spoke with Jack & Beyond founder Fulop Gabor, who previously managed the Borough Market branch of Konditor, a six-strong chain of shops across central London. Gabor explained that in March 2020 his business was able to instigate an immediate 24 hour delivery service, for which they charged only £3 for cake deliveries within a three-mile radius of their café to undercut the likes of Deliveroo. Gabor adds:

'We’ve changed our delivery system to make it as competitive as possible, we’ve developed a UK-wide brownie delivery system, with all flavours available in boxes of eight.'

The pandemic has meant that we have been forced to find new ways to connect with our loved ones, organise gifts and celebrate milestones. Having the opportunity to order bakes online for home delivery is not new, but what we have experienced is growth in baked items offered specifically for postal delivery and the focus on brownies. The perfect treat!

We have been impressed by each companies determination to offer their customers high quality bakes, perfectly presented (even once they have travelled through the post), and addressing customer preferences such as gluten free, nut free or plant based.

We enjoyed BBC Good Food's recent rundown of their top 8 brownies by post which includes:

The Exploding Bakery 'a cake company with an appetite for change in the way you experience your treats. They aim to light a fuse under the mass produced mediocrity of flabby, margarine laden, additive riddled cakes, and emerge from the flavourless rubble with something resembling a monument to flavour.'

Gower Cottage Brownies who 'provide the ultimate chocolate gift treat for every occasion' and are hugely proud to be 'winners of the prestigious Observer Food Monthly Award for the Best Welsh Independent Retailer for the last 3 years running and pride ourselves on the quality of our product and our customer service.'
